As you continue your holiday weekend, Major League Baseball expects to have a jam-packed Saturday with at least one double-header on the slate and possibly more depending on the weather on Friday and Saturday.  Make sure to check the weather forecast for your starting pitchers to avoid rainouts, and if you need a boost check out these options which are available on the waiver wire in most leagues.

If you do decide to hunt for help on the waiver wire, check out my daily options which appear right here on Fansided (archive here) most afternoons. You can bookmark the archive page or follow me on twitter for links to the daily posts of options to pick up.  Here are the basic ground rules: recent results are on the final slide of this post, and my choices are always available in at least half of ESPN leagues when I pick them (each player’s ownership percentage is included in parentheses after their team name).  I also include a risk and reward ranking for each selection on a scale of 1-5 with five being the most risk and the most reward.

Edinson Volquez-Pittsburgh Pirates (4.3%)

Volquez has been on a roll lately with one very ugly exception against this former team, the Reds.  In his last two outings, though, he’s bounced back nicely from that pounding allowing just one run on 13 hits in 14 innings over his last two starts.

His strikeouts ticked back up last Sunday as he fanned seven against the Mets in six shutout innings. The win he picked up evened his record at 6-6 on the season with a 4.07 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP.  Volquez is usually either right on or way off with little “middle of the road” results.

He’s a risky pickup but has big-time upside as he and the Bucs take on the Phillies in Pittsburgh. Philadelphia is a lineup he should be able to turn in a good start against, so look to him as your top option provided you can afford a bit of risk.

Risk-3, Reward-5
