The Dallas Stars were not active in the free agency when it came to acquiring any new defensemen. This was part of general manager Jim Nill’s plan. He plans to utilize the young defensemen he has in the pipeline.
“I’m excited about our defense,” Nill said. “We’ve got three or four young kids that are knocking on the door from the Calder Cup championship down in Texas. We think we’ve got lots of different options. We know they’re all going to get better. We think we’re going to be just fine.”
Nill, alongside coach Lindy Ruff, saw some excellent improvement from current defensive players. Two of which include Alex Goligoski and Trevor Daley. Both players have struggled in the recent years, but after being paired together they found an excellent groove.
“I think when those two started playing together and started playing big minutes, they formed a chemistry and just took off,” said Nill. “You look at the end of last season and you look in the playoffs, and I thought they were exceptional.”
With the top two defenseman set up, the team can now look to fill the remaining spots with younger players. Some of those being considered are Brenden Dillon, Jordie Benn and Kevin Connauton. Having such talent in the Stars AHL affiliate is an excellent place to be. However calling up the right players and making the appropriate pairs will be the key in creating a successful defense.
Despite not making any moves in terms of acquisitions, Nill still has a lot of work to do in order to establish an excellent blue line.
