What’s the only thing cooler than a game winning goal? A game winning goal with style. Erick Torres of Chivas USA did just that in his latest MLS match.
In the 94th minute of extra time, Chivas USA was tied 0-0 with Montreal and a draw felt inevitable. In what was likely one of their last chances, they began their attack. A long range attempt failed after it was blocked, but lucky for Chivas USA, Torres was right there. Torres had recently scored with an incredible long range volley against Real Salt Lake. I guess he wasn’t satisfied with one highlight, and needed another.
With an incredible display of finesse and athleticism, Torres lifted the ball into the air and volleyed the ball to himself. The defender was too late to recover and the goal keeper stood no chance after Torres’s foot connected with the ball. To top it all off, it was the goal to win the game. Pressure? Torres doesn’t know the meaning of the word. Most players wouldn’t try a volley to themselves in the 8th minute, let alone the 94th.
As Torres celebrated his goal, the Montreal players looked on in disbelief. Probably a mix of the realization that the draw they had worked so hard to hold on to, was lost in one kick, but also that Torres was able to pull that off.
At only 21 years old the question presents itself, how good can this kid be? When you’re nailing highlight plays every couple weeks, people start to notice. This was his 12th goal of the season.
