It it’s latest studies, Gartner stated on Monday that the global PC shipments will decline by just 2.4 percent in 2014. The number, while not great, is a major improvement over the drop of 9.5 percent that PC sales saw for 2013.

The research firm’s sales numbers include desktops, notebooks and premium devices.

Despite the slow adaption by consumers towards to largely unpopular Windows 8 operating system, PC sales have declined due to users not seeing a major need to refresh and upgrade their machines every couple of  years. However, despite this lack of updating, the sales should increase this year due to businesses upgrading more than individuals.

“Business upgrades from Windows XP and the general business replacement cycle will lessen the downward trend, especially in Western Europe,” said Ranjit Atwal, Garner’s research director, in a statement. “This year, we anticipate nearly 60 million professional PC replacements in mature markets.”

As you can see in the table above, tradition PC sales will continue to drop to just 276-million units sold globally this year while the “Ultramobiles” and premium devices will increase to 32-million. Those changes will become more significant in 2015 should recent trends continue.
