South Carolina continues to load up in the defensive backfield in their 2015 class as Damon Arnette (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) became the fourth defensive back to commit to the Gamecocks.

“I chose South Carolina because they are the ones who have been talking to me the longest,” Arnette tells Wes Mitchell of 247Sports. “They are the first big offer that I had. I feel comfortable there and I have a great relationship with not only (secondary coach and primary recruiter) Grady Brown, but (defensive coordinator) Lorenzo Ward, too.”

The 6-2, 185-pound cornerback is the nation’s No. 833 recruit overall regardless of position, the No. 64 cornerback and the No. 112 player in the Sunshine State. Arnette picked the Gamecocks over offers from Florida, Ole Miss, Kentucky, Ohio State, Florida State, Wisconsin and Duke, among others.

The Gamecocks are quietly putting together an elite class with an emphasis on the defense and with tonight’s commitment of Arnette, South Carolina now has 19 commitments in Steve Spurrier’s 2015 class and own the No. 6 class in the 247Sports team rankings and the No. 4 class in the SEC.

South Carolina is likely done recruiting cornerbacks, unless they believe Arnette is best suited as a free or strong safety in the coming years. It wouldn’t be that far-fetched to see him put on weight and get up to 215-pounds or so, but that would take a couple years to bulk up that much.

At 6-2, Arnette has great size and length to be an effective corner provided his speed and agility are enough to keep pace with some of the faster wide receivers he will face in the always-competitive Southeastern Conference.
