The Opening 2014: Top 10 SPARQ combine ranking results; SEC target Kirk Merritt leads the way
By Jack Crosby
The best high school football talent in the country has gathered out in Beaverton, Oregon this week for what has become one of the most anticipated recruiting events of the year, The Opening. Throughout the camp, these talented youngsters go through some rigorous competition as they showcase their skills in front of some of the most important people in the college football game today, as well as current NFL stars.

On Tuesday, the SPARQ testing took place, which is more or less a way to judge just how deadly the athletic skills are that these top recruits possess.
For a refresher, here’s a brief rundown of what the SPARQ testing actually is.
"The SPARQ score is calculated using five inputs. There is no height or arm length component involved. The five components are:(1) A Player’s Weight (this “normalizes” the score, giving credit to a bigger player who displays similar movement skills to a smaller, quicker player)(2) Forty Time(3) 5-10-5 agility drill (some call this the 20 yard shuttle or short shuttle)(4) Kneeling Powerball Toss (more on this later, but this replaces the bench press)(5) Vertical Jump"
The players in attendance this year took part in the testing on Tuesday, and not long after that, the official The Opening twitter account tweeted out the Top 10.
Now, these players will partake in the national championship Tuesday night on ESPNU and the WatchESPN app.
