Cory Schneider has signed a seven-year extension to remain with the New Jersey Devils worth $42 million, the team announced on Wednesday.

More from New Jersey Devils

Schneider, 28, took over for Martin Brodeur after he was acquired for a first round pick last offseason in a draft-day trade with the Vancouver Canucks, and finished third in the NHL last year with a 1.97 goals-against-average. He went 16-15-12 while playing in a career-high 45 games, compiling a .921 save percentage and recording three shutouts.

The Devils could not afford to let Schneider enter a lame duck season and it was widely expected that an extension would be forthcoming following the NHL Entry Draft completed and the first wave of free agency settled. Schneider owns a career 2.12 GAA and a .925 save percentage.

New Jersey is expected to see Brodeur sign elsewhere as he attempts to continue his Hall of Fame career in a different city and a different sweater for the first time in his career that may go down as the best to play in between the pipes.

Now the Devils are hopeful Schneider can take the Devils to similar heights that his predecessor did and bring the Stanley Cup back to New Jersey.
