Hercules actor Dwayne Johnson is in early negotiations with Universal to star in The Janson Directive.
Universal Pictures is currently working on the fifth installment in the Jason Bourne saga; however, it would seem as if this is not the only Robert Ludlum story the studio is looking to tell.
It would seem as if they are also looking to begin work on The Janson Directive.
According to Variety, they studio is currently in talks with Hercules actor Dwayne Johnson in the hopes of him taking on the lead role in the potential franchise.
The Janson Directive was one of five novels that were published after Ludlum had passed away.
The novels in the series that followed were written by author Paul Garrison. The most recent novel in the series, The Janson Equation, is being written by Douglas Corleone.
The franchise could potentially see Johnson as Paul Janson, an ex-Navy SEAL and former member of a covert U.S. Government Agency known as Consular Operations. Now that he has officially “retired,” he spends his time as a corporate security consultant who only takes on cases that help those truly in need.
According to Variety, Universal sees this as another potential franchise that could fall into the vein of the Bourne movies, which have been highly successful for the studio.
Johnson has certainly found success in films that have turned into franchises. He is currently finishing up production on the seventh film in the Fast & Furious saga. Johnson is also set to reprise his role as Roadblock in G.I. Joe 3.
While there is not a lot of information available for The Janson Directive, as the film is still in the very, very early stages of development, I am sure that once the studio begins to get their ducks in a row, more information will be readily available.
Dwayne Johnson can next be seen in his action-packed adventure Hercules which is due out on July 25, 2014.
