Before people get set to see Canelo vs. Lara this weekend in Las Vegas, we were treated to a tremendous card on Wednesday night on Fox Sports 1, and it was highlighted by a main event of Alfonso Gomez vs. Ed Paredes in a junior middleweight bout. It was the first time that Gomez had been in the ring since the injury he suffered two years ago in the loss to Shawn Porter.

After a 10-round battle, it was Gomez who got the unanimous decision win in this first bout in two years, despite having to fight his way through two phantom knockdowns.

Alfonso Gomez vs. Ed Paredes (Junior Middleweight Bout)

Round 1: Both fighters came out ready to start trading, and they did very early on. For not being in the ring for two years, this was expected from Gomez and he looked good in his first round of action since his injury.

Round 2: They go back to trading jabs right out after the bell, but Paredes seems to be on the attack just a little more than he was in the first round. With 10 seconds to go in the round, Gomez takes a spill to the canvas, but it was inadvertent and he gets up before the final bell of the second.

Round 3: Again the two come out firing at one another before they eventually lock up and get separated. To this point, Gomez has thrown a lot more punches than Paredes, hitting the 100-mark already. Paredes, much like the first round, starts trying to work the left jab in. With 50 seconds left, Paredes is given a warning to get the punches up higher. Gomez lands a nice left to the body before the bell.

Round 4: Immediately out of the gate, Gomez connects with another nice left hook to the body of Paredes. Gomez doing a great job of keeping his distance and getting the combinations in when he has to. With under a minute, they trade combinations with one another again. Right before the bell rings in the round, Paredes lands a huge left that knocks Gomez to the canvas for the first knockdown of the fight. However, after a closer look, Gomez actually slipped after missing on a swing. Still, he was charged with the knockdown–which was not even close at all.

Round 5: Paredes lands another nice left hook, and he definitely looks even more aggressive after he feels he got the knockdown in the last round. A short while later, Paredes connects with a right hook, followed by a left to the jaw of Gomez. With under 30 seconds, they exchange some nice blows in the center of the ring.

Round 6: After coming out right after each other once again, Gomez looks for a huge right to the head of Paredes and just narrowly misses. After another slip, Gomez is charged with another knockdown, and he rightfully states his case to the referee again. After the count, he gets right back on the offensive with the jabs against the ropes.

Round 7: Because of the two false knockdown charges, Gomez get backs on the offensive onslaught a lot more, and towards the end of the round he connects on two huge shots with the left jab. He’s able to get in one more shot to the body with the right before the bell.

Round 8: More offense from Gomez early, which again, is needed at this point. With near a minute to go, Gomez amps it up even more and connects with some shots against the ropes. With under 30 seconds left to go, he gets Paredes up the ropes again and connects with the combinations.

Round 9: Another good offensive round from Gomez, who may have worked himself back into this one despite the phantom knockdowns. One more to go.

Round 10: Both fighters trying to get their best shots in early before getting tied up. Gomez connects on some more combos with a minute left to go in the final round, and he has done a tremendous job thus far of convincing the judges that he has been the better fighter. After trading some shots with one another after the 10-second hammer, we’re going to the cards, which should be rather interesting to see.

Winner: (99-92, 98-92, 96-93) Alfonso Gomez via unanimous decision
