Think in terms of crickets and silence. The NFL 2014 Supplemental Draft has come and gone and teams did not a select a single player.

More from NFL

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the only players available were wide receiver Chase Clayton of New Mexico, University of North Carolina linebacker Darius Lipford, Virginia-Lynch defensive tackle Lakendrick Ross & SMU running back Traylon Shead.

It’s somewhat irregular for Supplemental drafts to come and go without a pick. In the last decade, only two supplemental drafts have gone selection-less. One of them, however, was last year’s draft, thus the last player selected in a supplemental draft was Josh Gordon. Before him, it was Terrelle Pryor in 2011. Perhaps they serve as a sign that NFL owners should exercise caution.

Two of the four now undrafted free agents will likely land on and NFL roster. Traylon Shead hasn’t played since 2012 but has the talent, size and running style that could translate to the NFL. Chase Clayton is still recovering from a knee injury but has the pass-catching ability to stick with a team and find a practice team spot.

The rookies are already at a disadvantage, however. The rest of their class has had time with their team to learn the playbook and spend time on the field with coaches and veterans. Many are lightyears ahead of these late-etries. If they get a spot at training camp, they will have a difficult path to make the practice team.
