Brazil came into the World Cup as heavy favorites to win the tournament on their home soil. A blow out loss to Germany in the semifinals instead forced them into the third place game against the Netherlands. The Dutch team came in with favorable odds of contending, but those odds skyrocketed after they opened the group stage with a blowout win over Spain, the defending 2010 World Cup Champions.

Instead they’re playing for third place and for Brazil, to restore a little bit of pride.

“I know my career will be marked by this defeat, but we have an obligation to move on and think about the next goal, which in this case is the match for third place on Saturday in Brasilia,” Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari said, via FIFA.com.

“I know it’s a much smaller dream that we all wanted, but we have to honour the shirt of the national team.”

Dutch coach Louis van Gaal, who isn’t worried about his job because he didn’t lose in horrendous fashion but is also moving over to Manchester United after the tournament, sees the opportunity for the Netherlands team to make a bit of history. If the Dutch win on Saturday, they will have finished the World Cup undefeated. While Argentina advanced on penalty kicks, the game ended in a draw.

“It was very, very sad and a dream has been broken,” Van Gaal said, via FIFA.com. “It’s not going to come back because it was all about being number one. But there is still something for us to do. We can still write history because the Netherlands lost matches in 1974, 1978 and 2010.

“Slowly but surely we are realising that we have to go for it. A Dutch team has never returned home unbeaten and that is now our aim. It’s going to be part of my speech that it will be my last match and I hope the players want to give me a present in the form of a victory, so that we remain undefeated.”

“I hope I can prepare them to play a good match. It’s quite something to go seven matches unbeaten [in a World Cup].”
