As the star quarterback of a high-profile college football program, you never want to bring any unwanted attention in your direction by making a bad choice off the field. And you especially don’t want to make that bad choice just one month until the season is set to begin, but that’s exactly what Auburn Tigers quarterback Nick Marshall did recently when he was cited for marijuana possession.

More from College Football

After bursting onto the scene last season in his first year under center, leading the Tigers to the BCS National Championship Game, Marshall just made a poor choice before beginning his second season under center in Auburn, and Reynolds, Georgia chief of police Lonnie Holder recently said that Marshall was very regretful of what he had done.

“He was very regretful,” Holder said. “He was very respectful. He was very apologetic. He seemed like he was disappointed in himself. He did get a little teary eyed as we had the conversation. I think sometimes what those kids need, they need somebody to talk to them and say, hey, you made a mistake, don’t let it happen anymore. …

“I explained to Nick that I was really disappointed in him. I told him that there are a million kids that look up to him. He is a role model whether he wants to be or not. I was disappointed that we have athletes out there doing that. I explained to him that we are not going to treat him any differently. I was disappointed in him. I hope he learns from his mistake and this will put him on the right path.”

Hopefully Marshall genuinely realizes that he can’t let something like this happen again going forward.
