Without Sean Lee leading the Dallas Cowboys linebacking corp in 2014, the team is going to be in desperate need of having a player step up to fill the void in both production and leadership.

More from Dallas Cowboys

If the comments from Cowboys linebackers coach Matt Eberflus are any indication, then that player could be Bruce Carter.

Carter has “ramped up” his level of play this offseason and that has Eberflus excited about what the future may hold for the team’s 2011 second-round pick.

“I think he’s taking steps in the right direction,” Eberflus said, via ESPN.com. “And he’s putting the work in. He’s meeting with me as much as he can. Studying the tape, giving him clear and concise goals daily for practice and he’s doing a good job of attaining those goals each and every day so when he does that he takes steps in the right direction to improve his fundamentals and his game.”

Carter has shown flashes of brilliance, but he has yet to really make the breakthrough that the team was hoping for when they selected him with a priority pick.

If his offseason workouts translate to growth on the field, then the Cowboys could finally have what they are looking for.

Considering the losses of Lee and star defensive end DeMarcus Ware, the Cowboys will need multiple players to step up to take their defense to the next level.
