NFL: Bill Belichick and the five best coaches in the league
By Bryce Olin
5. Chip Kelly, Philadelphia Eagles
Record: 10-6
It’s easy to scoff at my choice to include Kelly in the top-five of NFL coaches. Frankly, I can’t believe I’m doing it either, but I really have no other choice. There’s so many NFL coaches who screw up on a regular basis or never have the success Kelly had with the Philadelphia Eagles in his first season.
Kelly is a pioneer of offense in the NFL. His up-tempo scheme could revolutionize the NFL. Kelly’s spread offense was incredibly effective last season, and I don’t see it being any less effective this season. Yes, defenses have had all offseason to prepare for the Eagles’ offense. Surely, someone has figured out a way to stop Kelly’s offense. There were times when it looked mediocre last season, but, if you think for one second Kelly hasn’t figured out where his offense needs to improve and also figured out more ways to exploit NFL defenses, well, I guess you don’t have much of a clue anyway.
Kelly is a top-five NFL coach because he never waffles in his decision-making. He knows what he wants to do and when he wants to do it every game. You’re not going to see Kelly making mistakes in clock management, like some of the coaches around the league. And, that’s because Kelly goes for the kill every play. It’s pedal to the metal, full throttle, and whatever other making-the-car-go-faster expressions you want to throw out there. That’s Kelly, and that’s why he’s one of the best coaches in the league.
