Johnny Manziel was the main attraction at last year’s SEC Media Days when the Texas A&M quarterback and defending Heisman Trophy winner created a media firestorm after his dismissal from the Manning Passing Academy days prior. There won’t be that type of circus surrounding the Aggies this year, especially considering they are bringing a punter in Drew Kaser.

More from College Football

Joining Kaser at Media Days on Tuesday are offensive tackle Cedric Ogbuehi and defensive back Deshazor Everett who will follow head coach Kevin Sumlin who is scheduled to be be the first speaker in the afternoon session at 1 p.m. following Steve Spurier and Dan Mullen from South Carolina and Mississippi State, respectively, and before Tennessee’s Butch Jones.

Sumlin will undoubtedly be asked about the quarterback he no longer has on his roster as Manziel declared for the NFL Draft where he was taken with the No. 22 pick by the Cleveland Browns and hopes to win the starting quarterback job in training camp. Kenny Hill and Kyle Allen are vying for the job in College Station and could be a battle that is not decided until game week.

  • Ogbuehi is one of the nation’s top offensive linemen in the country and should continue the team’s dominance at left tackle the last three years with Luke Joeckel and Jake Matthews protecting the blind side of Manziel en route to being top-six selections in the draft each of the last two years.

Everett is the team’s best defender and team leader after he finished fourth on the team in tackles with 68 as a junior last year.

Kaser is a Ray Guy finalist last year and is arguably the best punter in the nation, but it is awfully uncommon for a player at that position to be chosen to participate in the event. Normally this environment is reserved for standout running backs, wide receivers and quarterbacks, of which A&M is not sending any players from those positions this year.

That could be a sign of the type of rebuilding season in store for Sumlin at Texas A&M this year.
