ESPY Awards 2014: Kevin Durant wins Best Male Athlete

The 2014 ESPY Awards took place on Wednesday and it was a success. Drake recovered well from a shaky opening monologue to deliver some hilarious skits and performances between awards.

There have also been some powerful moments from Michael Sam’s speech accepting the Arthur Ashe Courage Award to Stuart Scott’s speech for the Jimmy V Perseverance Award.

It was fitting then that Oklahoma Thunder superstar Kevin Durant won the award for Best Male Athlete. Durant was named the 2013-14 NBA Most Valuable Player and gave a powerful speech when accepting the award.

The most notable part was when he talked about his mother and the dedication she showed for providing Durant a better life and affording him opportunities, concluding by dubbing her “the real MVP.”

Durant’s mother wasn’t at the 2014 ESPYs to see Durant win this award, but he thanked her amongst a list of others. Durant didn’t quite have the time to elaborate like he did for the MVP award.

The other nominees were Peyton Manning of the Denver Broncos, Miguel Cabrera of the Detroit Tigers and professional boxer Floyd Mayweather.
