TV and movie star Ashton Kutcher was awarded his brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, putting him just one step away from a black belt.

A true A-list celebrity has leveled up in the “gentle art.”

On Tuesday, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu coach (and legend) Rigan Machado announced in an Instagram post that he had awarded Ashton Kutcher his brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. It’s no small accomplishment for Kutcher, and he now finds himself just one belt promotion away from a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, one of the highest and hardest honors to receive in the sport.

Machado is one of the most respected men in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. A former Pan American champion and ADCC medalist, Machado is no stranger to instructing celebrities and well-known Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners. Along with his brother Jean-Jacques Machado, the Machado brothers have taught Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to the likes of Chuck Norris, Joe Rogan, Eddie Bravo, former UFC heavyweight champion Josh Barnett, and martial arts legend Dan Inosanto. Machado is one of the few Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners to achieve the rare rank of red and black belt.

Documentary filmmaker Bobby Razak also posted a video of the no-frills promotion.

As for Kutcher, he isn’t the only celebrity to take up Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Ed O’Neill of Modern Family and Married with Kids fame has been training in the art since the 90s and is a black belt. Director Guy Ritchie is a black belt under Renzo Gracie. Additionally, celebrities such as Keanu Reeves, Tom Hardy, Demi Lavato, the late Anthony Bourdain, and Russell Brand have all trained in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to varying degrees.

Perhaps most famous for his role as Michael Kelso on That 70s Show, Kutcher has been in the public eye for over two decades. He has starred in movies such as Dude, Where’s My Car and The Butterfly Effect, and served as a producer on the popular celebrity prank show Punk’d.
