UFC Fight Night 45 results: Claudia Gadelha wins first UFC strawweight bout over Tina Lahdemaki

The UFC invades Atlantic City, New Jersey on Wednesday night for UFC Fight Night 45: Cerrone vs. Miller. The first bout of the night between Claudia Gadelha and Tina Lahdemaki is a historic one that will set the tone for the show.

Gadelha, an Invicta FC champion, and Finnish striker Tina Lahdemaki will be squaring off in the first UFC women’s strawweight bout in history.

Later this year, following the conclusion of season 20 of The Ultimate Fighter, an inaugural champion in the division will be crowned.

Gadelha was set to fight for the Invicta FC title before suffering an illness the night before her bout, and she was the favorite entering Wednesday night’s bout.

Round 1: Gadelha immediately took the center of the Octagon and was pressuring Lahdemaki. Gadelha was finding a home for her left hook with some crisp boxing and Lahdemaki was not able to get her striking going. Gadelha got the Muay Thai clinch and began working some knees before dragging Lahdemaki to the mat. Lahdemaki got back to her feet, but Gadelha landed a big takedown against the cage. Lahdemaki was active off her back and looking for a submission or a sweep, while Gadelha pounded away at the Finnish standout’s body. After Lahdemaki controlled Gadelha’s posture, Gadelha stood up before moving Lahdemaki’s legs to the side and falling into half guard. Gadelha eventually transitioned into mount and Lahdemaki gave up her back. Gadelha began working for the rear-naked choke. Lahdemaki was doing a good job at keeping Gadelha from getting under her chin and she survived the opening frame. FanSided scorecard: 10-8, Gadelha

Round 2: Gadelha again opened up her striking to start the round, before moving to the Muay Thai clinch. Gadelha used the clinch to move Lahdemaki to the cage, before changing levels and landing a big takedown. Lahdemaki gave up her back for the second time in the fight. Lahdemaki got back to her feet and the referee separated the two women who were tied up against the fence. Gadelha was beating Lahdemaki to the punch, but Lahdemaki was hanging tough. Lahdemaki landed a nice straight right down the pipe that opened up a cut above Gadelha’s nose. FanSided scorecard: 10-9, Gadelha (20-17, Gadelha)

Round 3: Lahdemaki defended a takedown to start the round and quickly broke away from a Muay Thai clinch attempt from Gadelha, as the two women exchanged strikes in the center of the cage. Each woman was able to land some nice shots throughout the round, but Gadelha landed a beautiful inside trip takedown to land a takedown midway through the round. Gadelha transitioned to half guard and worked some elbows to Lahdemaki’s head, but Lahdemaki was able to recover guard. With under a minute to go, Lahdemaki got back to her feet, but Gadelha changed levels and finished the fight with a strong double leg. FanSided scorecard: 10-9, Gadelha (30-26, Gadelha)
