LeapFrog has long been an industry leader in the technology space in its development of innovative ways to help children learn.  With the LeapPad successfully integrating fun and excitement along with learning for children, LeapFrog as a company has soared to new heights.  Now, LeapFrog is introducing a SmartTV console to encourage learning for children through entertainment.

The console can hold more than 100 games and is geared for children from age three through age eight.  One again, LeapFrog keeps the relevancy through providing games with exciting content such as Disney shows, Jake and the never Land Pirates as well as Sophia the First.

In an interesting take on a child’s gaming console, LeapFrog has incorporated multiple ways to play.  Taking cues from mainstream competitors such as the Xbox and PlayStation, children will be able to use traditional two hand controllers as well as motion activated body controls as well.  LeapFrog also mentions that all controllers were designed with children in mind, incorporating a smaller size for little hands.

The idea of motion controls likely comes from the incorporation on the bigger consoles, but Leapfrog mentions it as another way for children to get exercise.

In a quote to Mashable, a LeapFrog spokesperson had this to say, “While there are a number of existing ‘family’ or adult video game systems, less than 1% of tens of thousands of video games … are rated appropriate for children under the age of six years old. Plus, console hardware and controllers have not been designed for children.”

LeapFrog will start selling the console online in September for $149.99.  In the box you will receive one controller, a HDMI cable, a motion-sensor camera, 16 GB of memory and built-in WiFi to download apps.  Games on their own will be $29.99 with apps starting at $5.
