The Buffalo Bills are the first team in the NFL to begin training camp and there was some good news and some bad news for two key defenders as the Bills hope this camp will result in the Bills getting over the hump and into the playoffs.

More from Buffalo Bills

Leodis McKelvin was removed from the physically-unable-to-perform (PUP) list after he passed the team’s conditioning test. He is recovering from offseason hip surgery.

The 28-year-old defensive back returning to the field was a welcome sight to see, but now its time for the bad news as the disastrous offseason continued for defensive tackle, Marcell Dareus, who was placed on the non-football injury list.

Dareus, 24, was sent home from organized team activities last month after his second arrest this offseason. The former Alabama star and former No. 3 overall draft pick in the 2011 NFL Draft was arrested in May for possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia in March and was later arrested for drag racing and charged with three misdemeanors in June.

A September 9 trial awaits Dareus for the vehicular charges.

It has been a miserable offseason for Dareus who continues to do everything wrong for a player who could be in line for a lucrative extension from the Bills. Five weeks prior to his arrest in May, Bills general manager Doug Whaley said an extension for Dareus was on their radar and a priority.

Despite being named to the Pro Bowl last year as an injury replacement following a 71-tackle season and a career-high 7.5 sacks, that extension is looking more and more bleak as his off-the-field issues continue to mount.
