Bills’ Sammy Watkins wants to have impact, but not trying to be Superman
By Mike Dyce
The Buffalo Bills traded up in the draft to grab Clemson wide receiver Sammy Watkins, a talent young player who could be a key piece to an offense that brings them success for years to come.
Fans gravitated towards Watkins right away, making him feel welcomed and he clearly is a favorite at practices already,.
“It means a lot,” Watkins told reporters in comments distributed by the team, via Pro Football Talk. “I came from a big Division I school in Clemson so we need our fans. That’s what moved me and it’s great to hear the fans calling my name out and being active while we’re practicing.”
Being drafted that high in the draft, especially when a team trades up to get you, can add some pressure to a player. Watkins wants to have an impact on the Bills offense but isn’t trying to be Superman and dominate the offense, instead hoping to play his role in the scheme.
“With our offense, we’ve got a lot of explosive guys, so for me it’s just about coming in right away and trying to make plays,” Watkins said. “Don’t try and be Superman, but play my role and everything will work out.”
It is a good approach to downplay expectations, but that doesn’t mean the fans won’t carry him. He might not need to put up Calvin Johnson numbers as a rookie, but a few years into his career they might be expected.
