Giants owner says Tom Coughlin not on hot seat, but hasn’t earned right to leave on own terms

The New York Giants season got off to a rocky start in 2013, starting 0-6 before finally managing to string some wins together. Heading into a season with the prospect of facing a third straight season without a trip to the playoffs, some could assume that Giants head coach Tom Coughlin is on the seat.

If he is, it isn’t owner John Mara putting him there.
“There’s never a hot seat for anybody,” Mara said, via the New York Post “Listen, everybody knows what the expectations are, and … we expect to win, and if we don’t, then you have to make changes.
“…I have never once felt that we can’t win with Tom Coughlin and his staff. I know he believes it, and he’s able to convince the rest of us that we’re going to win. That’s the furthest thing from my mind right now, is making any changes anywhere.”
Coughlin certainly gets some more wiggle room than other coaches thanks to the two Super Bowl rings he has won with the Giants under his tenure. That hasn’t given Coughlin the right to leave on his own terms though.
“Does anybody ever earn that right?” Mara pondered. “That’s just not the way this business is in this day and age. Let’s hope that it goes that way, but we haven’t even had that discussion yet. … We’re just looking forward to the next couple of seasons.”
If the Giants start the season like the 2013 campaign that seat could begin heating up really quickly, especially if the New York Jets are playing well.
