The up-and-down career for wide receiver Brandon Carter at TCU is likely over, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

More from College Football

Carter was arrested for possession of marijuana but its his failures in the classroom that is the reason he has likely played his last down as a member of the Horned Frogs program.

“He has a redshirt year and I think the best thing for him is to get a new start,” said Patterson when asked if Carter would be invited back to the team when eligible. “It’s setting a precedent – you have to go to school.”

The 5-11, 186-pound receiver has been no stranger to academic concerns during his time in Waco and misses spring practices because of academics and will have to transfer down a level if he wants to be eligible to play football this fall.

He could sit out this season and take a redshirt year if he elects to transfer to another FBS program.

A four-star recruit in the 247Sports Composite Rankings in the 2011 class, Carter ranked as the nation’s No. 214 player overall and the No. 17 athlete and picked TCU after originally committing to the Oklahoma Sooners.

The Sooners landed a high-profile transfer receiver in Dorial Green-Beckham this offseason, could they double-down and take in another talented, yet troubled receiver?

That is purely my speculation as Carter has not given any indication on his future plans at the time of publishing.

In three seasons with TCU, the former top recruit caught 90 passes for 1,312 yards with nine touchdowns. He had 31 receptions for 370 yards and zero touchdowns last year.

This is a sad ending for one of TCU’s highest-ranked recruits under head coach Gary Patterson, but the long-tenured head coach is hoping for a happy ending.

“Both sides tried. Brandon did and we did. He has a chance out there someday,” Patterson said. “He can still get his degree and do what he needs to do and still come out a winner.”
