Lots of roster moves happening for the Phillies, including a big activation and a notable DFA-ing.

More from MLB

First off, the big story: Cliff Lee has been activated by the Phillies from the disabled list. The lefty starter missed over two months with a strained elbow, and has been the subject of trade speculation the last several weeks as the Phillies look to dump payroll.

It’s very possible that whatever work Lee does with Philadelphia is just to showcase him for a deal. The injury problems likely won’t chase away a team like the Yankees who are desperate for pitching help.

The Phillies also activated Wil Nieves and Reid Brignac from the DL.

To make room for all these players, the Phillies outrighted catcher Koyie Hill, optioned Cesar Hernandez to AAA and DFA’d Tony Gwynn Jr..

The son of the late Tony Gwynn got 119 plate appearances with the Phillies this year, hitting just .163/.281/.204 with 3 RBI and 2 SBs. At 31, there’s a very good chance Gwynn has seen his last action in the major leagues.

On the bright side, he’s not longer a member of the sad Phillies. There’s always a silver lining. You just have to look for it.
