New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan is confident in his team’s defense entering the 2014-15 NFL regular season, and he believes that his defense will once again be a big part of the Jets defense.

More from New York Jets

As the Jets prepare to kick off training camp, Ryan spoke with the media about his team’s defense and provided a glowing endorsement.

“I’ll stake my reputation on the way they play collectively,” Ryan said, via the New York Daily News. “I think we’ll be special.”

In order for the Jets defense to be “special” in 2014, they will need a number of players to step up.

One of those men will have to be 2013 first-round pick Dee Milliner, who struggled greatly during his first year as a NFL cornerback.

Despite his issues as a rookie, Ryan thinks that Milliner has what it takes to become the standout defender the Jets were expecting when they selected him just over a year ago.

“I think he’s got a chance to be,” Ryan said. “I don’t think there’s any doubt. But a lot of things can happen. A guy can get injured. A guy can do whatever where a guy gets derailed. But (I’m) saying that I’ll be disappointed if he’s not. Something like (injuries), in my opinion, would have to happen to him for him not to end up being that kind of player.”

The Jets kick off their regular season on Sept. 7 against the Oakland Raiders at home.
