Quarterback play will be the major question mark that first-year head coach Charlie Strong will have to answer in his first season in Austin and a healthy Ash will go a long way toward Texas having strong play from the position.
Ash missed much of last season with a concussion after beginning the season strong, but received a medical redshirt and with little in the way of experience behind him on the depth chart, having Ash under center is the best shot that Strong has of making his first season at Texas a successful one.
Tyrone Swoopes took the reps in spring ball with Ash sidelined after undergoing surgery to correct the fracture in his foot, but while he is a talented prospect, he only only saw action in five games last year as a true freshman for the Longhorns, completing only five of his 13 passes for 26 yards and running for an additional 79 yards.
Ash threw for 594 yards with six touchdowns in the first two games for Texas last season with 125 additional yards coming on the ground with one rushing touchdown before injuries cut his season short after three games.
The second offensive stalwart to receive favorable news on the medical front for the Texas Longhorns in the past few days as running back Johnathan Gray received clearance to return for fall camp after suffering a ruptured Achilles in November.
