The San Diego Chargers needed to improve their secondary during the offseason, and they are hoping that rookie cornerback Jason Verrett will be the answer to some of their problems.

More from Los Angeles Chargers

Chargers rookies and veterans report to Chargers Park in San Diego on Wednesday for the beginning of training camp, but don’t expect Verrett to be practicing with the team from day one.

According to the Associated Press, Verrett is not expected to practice until August.

Verrett is currently recovering from surgery to repair a torn labrum that he underwent in March.

The ultimate hope for the Chargers is that Verrett can get into playing shape before the middle of the preseason, so that he can show off his skills on the field before the team determines whether or not he will be a starter in the season-opener.

If Verrett shows off the skills that led to him being a first-round selection in the 2014 NFL Draft, he could very well start opposite Brandon Flowers on Sept. 8 against the Arizona Cardinals.

The Chargers selected Verrett with the No. 25 overall pick in the draft, so they are hoping to get a great return on their investment.
