The Colorado Rockies will be without Troy Tulowitzki for at least the next two weeks as they placed the MVP candidate on the 15-day disabled list with a hip strain.

More from Colorado Rockies

Tulowitzki may be the front-runner for the National League MVP at the moment as his .340 batting average leads the league and he also leads the league in on-base percentage (.432) and slugging percentage (.603), so the time on the shelf could result in his MVP chances taking a hit.

He’s also hit 21 home runs and leads MLB with 71 runs scored, but the 29-year-old shortstop goes back on the disabled list where he has been a frequent visitor throughout his career. It is really the only knock on the All-Star who last played at least 130 games back in 2009.

Tulowitzki has battled wrist, thumb, groin and quad injuries over the past six seasons that has seen him miss 282 games since 2008. When he’s in the lineup, he’s as good as there is in the National League, which is why he has had his name bandied about in trade rumors over the past few seasons.

With him landing on the disabled list he will not be traded, the chances were extremely remote to begin with, but the cellar-dwellers in the National League West will have to go without their face of the franchise as well as Justin Morneau and Michael Cuddyer as the Rockies continue their trek toward a 100-loss season.

The Rockies enter Tuesday with a 40-59 record but have won just 18 of their 63 games.
