According to industry insider Tidux, Sony is going to be releasing a large firmware update much sooner than later. The update, which will reportedly be known as version 1.80, will be released around the same time that Gamescom 2014 is taking place in Cologne, Germany.

The update will include features already available on the PlayStation 3 as well as some “new stuff”, according to Tidux. When asked specifically about some of the PS3 features coming to the PS4, Tidux responded by saying that media playback would be a part of it.

Gamescom 2014 takes place from August 12-17. So, fans should be hearing information regarding a new update in the very near future should this report be accurate.

As with everything else you hear, please take this as a grain of salt until Sony confirms the information. FanSided has reached out to Sony for comment, and will update this post should the company respond.

Mike’s Musings: The idea of media playback on the PS4 has me excited, though there are a few other features I’m hoping to see from Sony on the PS4 in the very near future. Things like the ability to rip music to the console via USB or CD, a better Twitch interface, suspended play and remote play support are just a few of the long list of things I want to see from Sony over the next few months. We’ll see just how many of these wishes are granted with the eventual 1.80 firmware update.
