Coming off three straight American League Championship series appearances, the Detroit Tigers know they’re going to need to improve their bullpen if they’re to make a fourth consecutive trip.

More from Detroit Tigers

With closer Joe Nathan looking shaky as ever (despite the occasional dominating outing) and the rest of the ‘pen looking plenty hittable, the Tigers have been plucking through the market in recent weeks. They’ve shown interest in a handful of in-demand relief pitchers like Joaquin Benoit of the San Diego Padres, but his big name also comes with a big price tag.

Understandably not wanting to give up the farm for a relief pitcher the Detroit Tigers have apparently been scrapping the bottom of the bargain bin and have inquired about a trade for Houston Astros closer Chad Qualls, this according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.

Chad Qualls, despite being 35-years-old has put up impressive numbers for the Astros this season which includes a 1.78 ERA, this after posting a 2.61 ERA for the Miami Marlins last season in 66 games. Of course, before that Qualls only had an ERA below 4.60 once since 2009, so he’s not without risk.

Given that, it’s unlikely the Detroit Tigers will be willing to part with much if they were to trade for the veteran arm, though the Houston Astros aren’t likely expecting much anyway.

It’s hard to say how much Qualls game will change if he is traded out of Houston, though judging by his previous and current season, it seems as if he’s found the fountain of youth.
