New York Mets fans have themselves all jacked up with the possibility that their team could make a big deadline splash by trading for Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki or outfielder Carlos Gonzalez, but they should probably take a breath according to Mets insiders.

More from Colorado Rockies

Per Adam Rubin of ESPN.com, neither Tulowitzki nor Gonzalez is likely headed to New York this time around. A source has told Rubin that New York is hesitant to package multiple top-level pitching prospects in a trade, even one to land a big-time player like Tulo or Gonzalez.

The Mets want to hang on to those big-time pitching prospects so they can call them up later and watch them go down for Tommy John surgery.

All kidding aside, this probably is the most sane course of action for the Mets. As Rubin points out, the Mets have worked hard over the years to accumulate their prospects, and they would like to get the maximum return for their efforts.

Trading away a couple good young pitchers now for a Tulo or a Gonzalez might please the fanbase, but in the long run it is probably not the right move for the Mets. The Mets need a lot more than one great stick in their lineup before they will be viable.

Trading away a veteran pitcher like Bartolo Colon, who is entertaining but not really vital to the long-term plan, makes much more sense.
