The South Carolina Gamecocks have been on an absolute tear on the recruiting trail. Head coach Steve Spurrier’s squad entered the weekend with 22 verbal commitments in the class of 2015, headlined by 4-Star defensive end Shameik Blackshear, 4-Star cornerback Mark Fields, 4-Star defensive end Arden Key, 4-Star athlete Jalen Christian and 4-Star outside linebacker Sherrod Pittman.

On Sunday, the Gamecocks added two more players they believe can make an instant impact when a pair of junior college defenders gave their pledges. 4-Star strong-side defensive end Marquavius Lewis and 4-Star inside linebacker Davon Durant committed to Spurrier on Sunday.

The 6’4, 271-pounder Lewis attends Hutchinson Community College in Hutchinson, Kansas but is originally from Greenwood, South Carolina. Lewis is considered the country’s top junior college defensive end prospect, the top prospect in the state of Kansas and the second-best overall junior college prospect in the class of 2015 (running back Jovon Robinson, an Auburn Tigers’ commitment is ranked first), according to 24/7 Sports’ composite rankings. Lewis has an impressive list of offers, including the Alabama Crimson Tide, Miami Hurricanes and Southern Cal Trojans, among many others. Lewis was very interested in the Hurricanes, taking an unofficial visit there last week, but a visit to South Carolina this weekend, he pulled the trigger.

The 6’2, 240-pound Durant is also originally from Greenwood, South Carolina but now plays for Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kansas. He is ranked as the country’s seventh-best overall junior college prospect, the best junior college inside linebacker prospect and the third-best prospect in the state of Kansas, according to 24/7 Sports’ composite rankings. Durant chose the Gamecocks over offers from the Arizona State Sun Devils, Ole Miss Rebels and Washington Huskies, among others.

The Gamecocks’ class now ranks third in the country, trailing only the Alabama Crimson Tide (1) and Texas A&M Aggies (2).
