The Boston Celtics entered the 2014 offseason with high hopes. Armed with young talent and several future draft picks, including the sixth and 17th-overall selections in last month’s draft, the Celtics believed they had the tools to make a big move. Instead, they re-signed guard Avery Bradley to a four-year deal, drafted former Oklahoma State Cowboys’ point guard Marcus Smart and former Kentucky Wildcats’ swingman James Young and made a few minor moves to get a hold of additional assets.

According to Chuck Myron of Hoops Rumors, the Celtics are still trying to make a big splash.

"Well, I wish I could, but that seems a long shot for now. They’ll certainly try. I’d expect them to be active around the deadline, and there always seems to be a fairly significant deal that goes down right before the season starts, so I’m sure they’ll be trying to get involved in something in October. They’re reportedly one of a handful of teams trying to work their way into the Love talks as a third team that would facilitate a deal that sends Love elsewhere. That’d be a tough pill for them to swallow, though, knowing how hard they went after Love."

The Celtics’ ultimate goal is to keep Rondo through his current contract and eventually pair him with another star. Landing Minnesota Timberwwolves’ power forward Kevin Love is their goal but that seems unlikely. Rondo was limited just 30 games while returning from his knee injury and averaged 11.7 points, 9.8 assists, 5.5 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game. He shot 40.3% from the field, 28.9% from beyond the arc and 62.7% from the free throw line.
