The three-star defensive tackle is rated as the nation’s No. 23 defensive tackle, No. 320 overall recruit regardless of position and the No. 45 recruit in the talent-rich state of Texas, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Lampkin was originally committed to Oklahoma, but on April 22 and later isued a top three earlier in July consisting of the Sooners, Longhorns and LSU Tigers. Following an unofficial visit to Texas on July 18, the decision was made for Lampkin who made the news official today.

Earlier this month, Lampkin spoke with 247Sports about his relationship with Strong and the Texas coaches recruiting him like defensive line coach Chris Rumph.

“Texas loves me,” he said. “That might be the school that is recruiting me the most right now. Coach (Chris) Rumph is a very good coach. I saw him when he was with Alabama. I went out there to watch the LSU game and he was a very good coach.

“Coach (Charlie) Strong, he always tells me to call him so he can check in on me,” he added. “He doesn’t even talk about football. He just asks me how I’m doing and stuff like that. That really stands out to me when he’s talking about my life.”

The 6-3, 291-pound defensive tackle is the first defensive tackle to commit for this year’s class and the second defensive lineman, joining three-star end Charles Omenihu from Rowlett high school in Rowlett, Texas.

With the addition of Lampkin, Texas now owns the nation’s No. 16 class in the nation and the No. 1 class in the Big 12.
