Microsoft is still plugging away with the Windows Phone, and while it is no doubt behind the competition of Apple and Android, some much-needed support is headed to an update of the smartphone.  Right now, the Windows Phone features several tiles of various size, and in an upcoming update, you will be able to drag and combine each tile into a single folder.

Both iOS and Android devices introduced folder support long ago, it was merely a small upgrade as part of a larger update.  On the Windows Phone, it is a bigger process.  With tiles of different shapes and sizes, folder support was never something that was welcomed.

The folder support will come through in Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1.

Adding folder support to the Windows Phone is a two-headed beast.  On one hand, it signifies that the design of the tiles missed the mark from the get go.  On the flip side however, the fact that users are demanding folder support suggests that they have so many apps downloaded they are in danger of losing them on the home screen.

There are some other featured coming in Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1, such as the ability for the phone to have interactive cases, as well as support for voice over LTE.

At this point there is no definitive date for the update, however it could come as early as next week.

It is refreshing to see Microsoft continuing to work through improving the Windows Phone.  With such a small portion of the market taking advantage of the smartphone however, it will take more improvements and continued innovation to bring the phone to the forefront.
