When we went off the air last week, it was finally revealed for a certainty that Brock Lesnar will be taking on John Cena in the main event of WWE SummerSlam, with the WWE World Heavyweight Championship on the line. However, despite the announcement at the end of the show, the champion was not in attendance.
Last week, Cena was off filming his latest movie, so he did not have a chance to respond to the news that he will have to put his title on the line against the Beast at one of the biggest shows of the year.
Well Cena will be there this week, and you know he will have something to say to begin the hype for one of the biggest SummerSlam main events of all time.
Also of note from last week, Stephanie McMahon will make her return to the show. Last week, after striking Brie Bella, Stephanie was arrested and taken to jail for battery. Well in storyline, she was released from the jail and will have something to say on Monday night about the whole situation.
All of this and more will play itself out on Monday night as we get set for this year’s SummerSlam. And as is the case every week, stop back here at this link at 8 PM ET as we follow the show live as it plays out.
Before the show begins, be sure to get the discussion started in the comments below.
WWE RAW (July 28):
Opening Segment
RAW on Monday night started off with the appearance of the WWE Champion John Cena, who was absent from last week’s show while he was filming his latest movie project. He comes out with a serious look on his face. We might not be getting the joking Cena, which is a good idea given his opponent at SummerSlam in Brock Lesnar.
Before taking the microphone, he soaks in the crowd reaction and calls them a very lively bunch. He says last week it was revealed that Brock Lesnar was the Plan C, and now he’s a marked man by the Authority. They want it so badly, that they hired a mercenary in Lesnar.
Cena then goes on to point out how there were some fans that were happy about this. He knows that there are people that want to see Lesnar beat the hell out of him, and that draws a lot of cheers.
He calls Lesnar the most destructive force in the company, and then of course, points out the fact that Lesnar defeated the Undertaker at WrestleMania. Cena then agrees that he will get the beating of a lifetime, but he won’t lay down. He’ll fight. He’s going to SummerSlam to beat Brock, just like he did in 2012.
Heyman then makes his appearance on the stage.
He tells the fans that Brock will be taking the belts from Cena at SummerSlam. Heyman calls Cena courageous for realizing the beating that’s coming, but he doesn’t think he understands how much of a victim he’s going to be. He tells Cena that no one has seen nor heard from the Undertaker since WrestleMania.
Paul then goes on to explain just how much Lesnar is going to enjoy the beating.
Cena says that he’s sick of Heyman’s crap, and he gives him a lecture about passion.
Cesaro then comes out and says that he won’t let Cena talk to Heyman like that. He calls him a walking billboard and says that he wants a match with the champ right now.
John Cena vs. Cesaro
Well after what was a rather entertaining opening segment, we get an impromptu match between two of the biggest stars in the company. After the promo, they cut to commercial.
Back from commercial, the bells rings and we’re underway.
They start the match with an old-fashioned test of strength, with Cesaro getting the upper hand early. Cena then counters with a pretty nice takedown and gets a headlock in on the mat. Next, he hits a rather nice monkey flip.
Basically, this match is Cena showing off some new moves, more or less.
It’s not long before Cesaro takes advantage and starts taking Cena apart. After going for a bodyslam, Cena gets away and hits maybe the worst hurricanrana in history. More points to Cesaro taking it the best he could, rather than Cena for the attempt.
Cena gets knocked to the outside and the ref starts counting. He gets back in and he starts pounding away on Cesaro. He goes for a bulldog, but Cesaro counters by tossing him across the ring and they cut to commercial.
Back from the break, Cena starts to take over the match once again, but Cesaro counters and plants him with a DDT. He only gets a two count. He goes for the swing, but Cena counters and hits him with a power bomb.
Cesaro gets Cena on the apron and hits the amazing superplex. Never gets old.
Then he hits the swing!
Cesaro locks in a submission hold, but Cena reverses and hits a five knuckle shuffle. He goes for the AA, but Cesaro grabs the top rope. Cesaro hits a cross body from the top, but Cena reverses and goes for the AA. Cesaro escapes and drops Cena with the uppercut, but is only able to get a two count.
Cena hits the AA from the top rope for the win.
Winner: John Cena
Stephanie McMahon and Triple H are talking backstage, and Randy Orton walks in. He wants the main event changed to he and Cena, but Hunter refuses. He tells Orton that he has to take care of Roman Reigns, who will be in a match tonight against Kane.
Back from commercial, Paige is on her way out to the ring. She gets on the mic and says that she wants to set the record straight. She says that she’s young and sometimes she lets her emotions get the best of her. She still considers AJ one of her best friends. She admits that she crossed the line. Paige promises to never act that way again.
Out comes AJ. She calls Paige a Casper looking krumpet. AJ says that she gets why she’s mad, because she lost the title in an instant. She tells Paige that she doesn’t play little girl games. Paige calls AJ crazy, and immediately she knows that she made a mistake. After saying that she understands, AJ starts attacking Paige. She takes her apart on the outside and Paige backs her way up the ramp and AJ stands tall in the ring with her belt.
Triple H and Stephanie McMahon make their way down to the ring following the AJ Lee and Paige segment. Stephanie is playing the distraught card. In the ring with the microphone, Triple H tells the fans that over the years they’ve all spent a lot of time together. He tells them that he’s never been more disappointed in the fans than he was last Monday night on RAW for laughing at his wife when she was arrested. They found it funny that she was handcuffed and dragged from the arena and taken away like a common criminal. He says that he’ll never forgive them for that. Hunter says they don’t know how badly it hurt her, and all of it over a simple misunderstanding. Brie Bella antagonized his wife, and she was only defending herself. Brie was asking for it. All charges were dropped, except the battery charge, which Brie will not drop.
Stephanie takes the mic and asks Brie to come out.
Chris Jericho’s music hits instead. Triple H says that it’s not the time, but Jericho leads the crowd in singing the ‘Cops’ theme song. Hilarious. Jericho, after some more pandering, asks Hunter why he didn’t go with his wife to the jail immediately. Hunter tells him that he has to focus on Bray Wyatt. Jericho says that he wants Wyatt tonight, but Triple H tells him that he will have to wait until SummerSlam. He gets blindsided by Seth Rollins, and that’ll be the match tonight.
Dolph Ziggler and the Usos vs. The Miz and RybAxel During the match, the new faction of Xavier Woods, Kofi Kingston and Big E come out to ringside, presumably to start something with the Usos by the time this is done. After some small back and forth action, Ziggler picks up the win for his team with the Zig Zag.
Back from the break, R-Truth raps his way to the ring.
Well we were treated to a minor surprise during Monday night’s edition of RAW as the streak of Bo Dallas came to an end, shockingly at the hands of R-Truth.
When the show came back from commercial at one point, R-Truth made his way down to the ring. After that, Dallas made his way out and we all thought that we were going to see another victory added to the list.
Well that wasn’t the case.
Just moments after the match began, Dallas was rolled up by R-Truth for the win.
Now why WWE decided to end this streak in this manner, we will never know that answer probably. They really had something going with the gimmick, and they just kind of threw it all away.
Sure, Dallas went ballistic after the match, but that still doesn’t make up for that fact that this was probably a bad decision by the creative team, or whoever came up with the idea.
It will, however, be interesting to see where they go with things from here on out. Dallas probably is talented enough on the mic to keep getting himself heat from the crowd, but it was so entertaining to see him keep getting the wins as well.
Overall, though, bad move, WWE.
Rusev and Lana are in the ring bashing America once again. Since they’re in Texas, they start to go after George W. Bush. But they’re quickly interrupted by Jack Swagger and Zeb Colter. Zeb starts telling Lana all about America and the American flag.
Swagger rushes down the ramp and attacks Rusev. But Rusev quickly gets the upper hand. In the ring, Swagger goes for the Patriot Lock, but he can’t get it. He does, though, knock Rusev out of the ring.
Damien Sandow comes out dressed as a spaceman. Adam Rose comes out dancing, tells him to be a Rosebud and then pins him. This is getting ridiculous already.
Roman Reigns vs. Kane
Kane is out first for this one, followed by Roman Reigns, through the crowd, with yet another good pop from the live crowd.
As he’s making his way through the crowd, Randy Orton attacks him out of nowhere. Reigns tosses Orton over the barricade, then hits Kane with the Superman punch off the steps.
He gets in the ring and hits Kane in the corner after a Samoan drop. But Orton makes his way back into the ring and gets hit with a Superman punch of his own. Kane then hits Reigns with a chokeslam and leaves him for Orton.
From there, things got all kinds of vicious.
Orton took Reigns to the outside and started the onslaught that included the DDT off the barricade and finished up with two RKOs on the table.
Fandango vs. Diego
Of course, off the distraction from Summer Rae and Layla, Diego was able to get the win. This can’t go on much longer.
Chris Jericho vs. Seth Rollins
Jericho is out first for this one, followed by the Money in the Bank winner himself, Seth Rollins when they get back from commercial.
The bell rings and we’re underway. They lock up for a brief second and Jericho starts working Rollins over in the corner. Rollins slides to the outside, but Jericho goes right out after him. They battle on the outside from a few minutes before Rollins goes back into the ring. He goes for a dive to the outside, but Jericho catches him with a right.
Back in the ring, Jericho hits a suplex on Rollins, followed by a nice enzigurai. Jericho drapes Rollins’ head over the rope and starts choking him. After the break up, Rollins starts to mount the comeback.
With Rollins on the apron, Jericho launches himself from the turnbuckle and knocks him to the floor before they cut to commercial.
Back from the break, Rollins is firmly in control on the mat, but Jericho is trying to fight his way out. They break the hold Rollins hits a splash on Y2J in the corner. He has him draped over the apron and then begins to bite him.
He goes for another splash in the corner, but Jericho counters. He goes to the top rope and hits an ax handle. But Rollins counters off the ropes and gets a two count.
As Jericho tries to mount the comeback, Rollins smashes his head into the turnbuckle. He heads to the top, but Jericho gets right up there with him and tries to go for a superplex. Rollins blocks it, but gets back body dropped from the top. Jericho hits a cross body, but only gets a two count.
Next, they trade blows in the center of the ring, and Rollins gets the upper hand. But Jericho pops right up and blasts Rollins. He goes for the Lionsault, but misses. Rollins picks him up and launches him into the corner.
Rollins comes off the top but he gets caught with a Code Breaker.
The lights go out and, yep, you guessed it: Here’s the Wyatts.
They attack Jericho immediately. It finishes up with a Sister Abigail from Bray.
Stephanie McMahon/Brie Bella segment
Back from the commercial break, Stephanie McMahon makes her way down to the ring, all by herself. Stephanie gets in the ring and explains how hard it has been on her since getting arrested last week RAW. She explained how hard it has been on her family and her kids.
Brie Bella walks through the crowd and gets in the ring. She tells Stephanie to stop the act. Stephanie asked her to pleas drop all the charges, and she not only agreed to stop tormenting Nikki, but she also would give her a raise.
Brie said that she was okay with that, but that was not all she wanted. No, she then let it be known that she wanted a match with Stephanie at SummerSlam.
For about five minutes, Stephanie pleaded with her not to make her do that. But after Brie told her that she would see her in court, Steph finally agreed, with her eyes full of tears.
But we’d find out that the tears were fake as she slapped Brie off the apron, and then said that she was going to make her her bitch at SummerSlam.
Brie quickly got back into the ring and the two started going at it until the officials came down to break them up.
But it’s official now, Stephanie McMahon and Brie Bella will work SummerSlam.
