Let the speculation begin. Oh, who are we kidding? In this day and age, we should say that it is time to let the rampant speculation continue.

More from Boston Red Sox

Jon Lester has been scratched from his start on Wednesday.

Earlier on Tuesday night we heard that the Red Sox had a backup plan in place in case Lester was scratched. That was a possibility both in the event that a trade actually happened and in in the event that the Red Sox simply wanted to give themselves some room to breathe.

Whatever the case may be, it will be Brandon Workman and not Lester on the mound for the Sox on Wednesday.

Will it be the Los Angeles Dodgers who swoop in and make a deal? While teams are reluctant to acquire Lester because he is a true rental, the Dodgers would have to be the most confident of any potential suitor when it comes to the possibility of signing Lester to a multi-year extension this off-season.

That doesn’t mean we should rule out teams like the Pittsburgh Pirates, Milwaukee Brewers, or the St. Louis Cardinals. But the resources that the Dodgers have to offer might be tough to beat. The next 48 hours should be interesting.
