Rumors about Jon Lester’s future home have centered mainly around the Los Angeles Dodgers with dark horse teams like the Pittsburgh Pirates popping up, but now another West Coast squad has entered the conversation. Per Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Seattle Mariners are believed to be contenders in the Lester pre-deadline sweepstakes.

More from Boston Red Sox

The Mariners have somewhat surprisingly contended in the American League West this year and could be looking to add one more starter to make a run at the division or at least the wild card. Lester is probably the best left-handed pitcher on the market with David Price looking less-and-less likely to be dealt. Cole Hamels is also potentially available.

Lester is the kind of ace who would be a potential game-changer for a team like Seattle. The Red Sox haven’t been able to sign him to an extension and may be looking to trade him for prospects, then turn around and re-sign him after the season.

If the Mariners do get Lester, we would be faced with the somewhat unlikely scenario of him and former Yankee Robinson Cano teaming up to make a run at the postseason. Again, if the Mariners want Lester, they will likely have to outbid the Dodgers to get him.

The Mariners were believed to be interested in David Price at one time as well.
