This offseason the New Orleans Saints went out an got themselves a nice veteran presence for the defensive side of the ball when they signed 12-time Pro Bowler Champ Bailey. He was quickly scooped up by the Saints after he was released by the Denver Broncos, and because of his legendary status, the excitement was high.

But the problem is, he might not even be with the team by the time the regular season starts.

As Greg Bedard of TheMMQB.com pointed out in his recent piece, given the wealth of young talent on defense and the low guaranteed number on his contract, there is a chance that the Saints could just let Bailey go if they don’t feel he can be a viable asset for them on the field.

“It’s early, but it would not be a shock if Bailey, who has just $500,000 guaranteed on his contract, doesn’t make the team,” Bedard writes. “The Saints have some promising young defensive backs who might have to be kept. Undrafted free agent Pierre Warren, for instance, was making plays all over the field.”

Now there is still some time, with training camp just opening up, for Bailey to show the team that there is a lot that he can provide, not only with veteran leadership, but with being able to give some of these young guys a break at times throughout the season.
