Dez Bryant is undoubtedly one of the top five wide receivers in the NFL, and yet he and the Dallas Cowboys were unable to reach an agreement to extend his contract this offseason.

Instead, the Cowboys opted to sign left tackle Tyron Smith to an 8-year, $98 million extension earlier today. By giving the extension to Smith, the Cowboys essentially made it impossible for them to sign Bryant to an extension.

Smith’s extension, although deserving, seemed to be a slap in the face to one of the Cowboys top playmakers in Bryant. After news broke of Smith’s extension, Bryant could not keep himself together.

Bryant absolutely has a right to be upset with his contract situation, but in the end he will have to play out his last year of his contract and see what he will get paid at year’s end. Unfortunately for Bryant that means he will get paid $1.78 million for the 2014 season and count $5.37 million against the team’s salary cap.

Bryant is 25 and is seemingly improving on the football field every year. Last season was Bryant’s best yet, where he hauled in 93 receptions that compiled 1,233 yards and 13 touchdowns. If Bryant keeps up his productivity, he will be one of the highest paid wide receivers in the NFL next season.
