Jon Lester trade rumors: Rule out the Miami Marlins?

The list of teams looking to potentially deal for Red Sox starter Jon Lester keeps getting longer, but one team you should probably strike from that list is the Miami Marlins.

Rumors began circulating Tuesday that Lester could make sense for the Marlins as a half-season rental, but cold water has been thrown on that particular bit of speculation by Marlins president of baseball operations Michael Hill.
Hill indicated (via The Fish Pond) that the Marlins are not interested in a rental:
"“Not ideal for what we’re trying to do,” Hill said of a rental. “It’s something that we’ve entertained and have dipped our toe in the water. It all depends on the cost to acquire a rental and if it sidetracks what we’re trying to do in the long term.”"
Lester would be an expensive proposition in terms of prospects and it’s likely Miami would not be willing to go that high. Plus they would almost certainly not be able to sign him after the season.
Miami does look like a fringe contender after getting back to the .500 mark, but the operative word there is “fringe.” It seems the Marlins front office isn’t all that convinced by their recent uptick, at least not enough to be willing to go all-in on a player like Lester.
The Mariners, Brewers, Dodgers, Pirates and Cardinals all look better-positioned to make a run at Lester. Miami is probably better off holding on to their prospects and waiting for a brighter tomorrow.
