Sony turned down EA Access

Yesterday, Electronic Arts announced EA Access.  EA Access will be a subscription based service launching this summer, that will give gamers access to past EA titles, a 10 percent discount on future purchases, and early access to new releasing Electronic Arts Games.  However, it’s coming only to Xbox One.  We now know that this is because Sony turned the service down.

GameInformer reached out to a Sony representative via email and were told, “We evaluated the EA Access subscription offering and decided that it does not bring the kind of value PlayStation customers have come to expect. PlayStation Plus memberships are up more than 200% since the launch of PlayStation 4, which shows that gamers are looking for memberships that offer a multitude of services, across various devices, for one low price. We don’t think asking our fans to pay an additional $5 a month for this EA-specific program represents good value to the PlayStation gamer.”

EA Access will run gamers $5 a month or $30 a year for the aforementioned content.  Based on PlayStation Plus already being a subscription based service, Sony decided that EA Access doesn’t hold enough value for them to bring the service to their console.

Sony has long knocked Microsoft for offering an online service that requires a $5 a month payment to truly be utilized.  With the success of Xbox Live Gold, it seems to reason that Sony should be the one taking notes.

Xbox Live still stands head and shoulders above the online experience that is PlayStation Plus.  The accessibility to friends, the level of service, and the overall product of Xbox Live Gold still dwarfs PlayStation’s offering.  It remains to be seen what this decision will do for PlayStation, and if they will back off it at a later date.

As of now, Xbox One gamers will be the only ones to experience EA Access.
