Tyron Smith embodies Cowboys’ mental toughness
Tyron Smith has signed a contract on Wednesday that reset the Cowboys’ record books. The Cowboys have never given a non-quarterback a contract of the same magnitude as his 10-year, $110 million deal. NFL deals are constantly subject to change and this contract is no exception, but it’s an NHL-type deal. It unlikely he’ll play through the whole thing, but the Cowboys and Smith have mutually invested a decade in one another.

“Look at him when he walks into the room,” Jason Garrett said, via ESPN Dallas. “And beyond that, beyond just his physical stature, he’s got a real maturity about him. It’s really impressive and a lot of the guys have to deal with a lot of things when they transition from college football to pro football. He’s something else. And the kind of guy he is. We really emphasize the importance of mental toughness. We believe that’s a distinguishing trait in players and in teams. And he represents that in spades. He’s off the charts. We love him to death.”
It’s fitting that Smith is the embodiment of the Cowboy’s fortitude. He’s all that Garrett wants out of a player and he deserved a big contract. Smith, 23, is one of the most important players on the Cowboys’ roster. He’s essential to their Super Bowl hopes.
