Things got a little heated at Cincinnati Bengals training camp today and Pro Bowl receiver A.J. Green took a punch that got the crowd’s attention.

Training camp fights are a bit commonplace as emotions get heated in the summer heat and humidity as players are competing against each other and battling for roster spots.

“That’s what training camp is about,” defensive coordinator Paul Guenther said, via the Cincinnati Enquirer. “We don’t want to get any of our teammates hurt, but part of training camp is setting your identity, playing physical and that’s how we want to play. We have to be smart about that. We don’t want to have any penalties. One thing I’ve told the defense is we want to be known as smart bullies. We want to know what to do, play with a physical edge and bully some people.”

So having said that, it’s not a good idea if you’re fighting for a roster spot to take a swing at the team’s best player.

That’s what happened today when second-year linebacker Emmanuel Lamur took a swing at Green. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see Lamur get cut, now would it?

You can see the hit take place underneath the goal posts in this video via Joe Moore.

The film is tough to see the punch being thrown and if it was landed, but it is clear that you should never, ever take a swing at the best player on the team unless you want to put your spot on the roster up for grabs.
