PlayStation outselling Xbox 3 to 1 this year

Sony released the company’s first quarter earnings on Thursday morning, and while it’s no doubt impressive that the company’s PlayStation consoles are selling so well, it’s even more impressive when you look at Sony’s primary competition.

Sony announced that it sold 3.5 million combined units of the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 during the first quarter of the current fiscal year. When you look at those numbers compared to the numbers that Microsoft released earlier this week, there really is no comparison.

Microsoft didn’t even announce how many consoles the company has sold so far this year. In fact, the Redmond, WA-based company announced that it has shipped, not sold, just 1.1 million combined Xbox One and Xbox 360 consoles during the same exact time frame.

If we were to assume that Microsoft has sold each of the 1.1 million consoles it shipped in the first quarter, which likely isn’t the case, then that would mean PlayStation is outselling Xbox by a little over a 3 to 1 margin. However, the ratio is likely a bit larger due to the fact that had Microsoft sold over a million consoles, it likely would’ve stated as such.

Sound off FanSiders! What do you think of the recent sales releases for the consoles? Is it surprising to you that PlayStation is outselling Xbox by such a large margin? Leave your thoughts in the comment section below.

Mike’s Musings: I really have to think that the flip-flopping by Microsoft on its plans and policies for the Xbox One lead to A LOT of people deciding to go with the PlayStation 4. It’s hard to push a device like Kinect down consumers’ throats, not utilize device in any major way and still expect people to purchase the console with the peripheral. It just isn’t going to happen.
