No football player ever seems to entirely close the door behind them when they retire from the NFL. Every player seems to always leave that door open just a little crack in case something happens that gives them one more last shot at glory.

More from New England Patriots

Brady Quinn is no exception to this rule. Quinn announced earlier this week that he was retiring from the NFL to pursue a broadcast career with Fox. Then Fox announced that Quinn will be teamed with Dick Stockton as a commentator.

Door closed? Not so fast.

Quinn told Dan Patrick (via PFT) that despite his new gig he’s still looking at playing, and in fact had a workout with a team on Monday. Quinn wouldn’t name the team that tried him out but it’s been revealed that this team was the Patriots.

According to Quinn, the unnamed team that is actually the Patriots told him to stay close to the phone because something could happen:

"“It went well,” Quinn said. “In this particular situation, though, they need something to happen in order for me to possibly be there.”"

That “something to happen” is what? Tom Brady, Ryan Mallett and Jimmy Garoppolo all going down with injury? Congrats Brady Quinn. You’ve made it on to Bill Belichick’s “Contact in Event of Pants-S–ttingly Dire QB Emergency” list.

Quinn indicated that Fox is aware of his comeback efforts and is willing to work with him. Translation: Fox knows Quinn has no shot to play, but they will humor him if it makes him feel better.

Brady Quinn isn’t retired from the NFL, but he might as well be.
