One of the biggest threats to college football’s tradition and pageantry has been declining student attendance figures, and it isn’t just happening at smaller schools either. It’s even happening to one of the most loyal and fervent fan bases in country—the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

More from College Football

The AP is reporting that Nebraska still has 1,000 student tickets left for sale a month before the season. To some that may seem like a low number, however that’s 1,000 out of the allotted 8,500 student tickets. Or to be put another way, nearly 12 percent of the tickets are still unsold ahead of the season.

It’s not something new though, as fellow Big Ten stalwarts like Michigan and Iowa have also had major issues selling student tickets and with the policies within the stadium for those student tickets.

Contrast that with places like Wisconsin, Ohio State and Penn State where tickets were gone in a matter of minutes or hours—not days or weeks or months.

What could be the cause for Nebraska students to be lukewarm to ticket purchases this season? Well, one look at the schedule may give a big clue. The Huskers will host the once-mighty Miami Hurricanes in a non-conference game, but these aren’t the Hurricanes of the 1990’s anymore.

The rest of the slate features games against Florida Atlantic, McNeese State, Illinois, Rutgers, Purdue and Minnesota. Truly snooze-inducing, especially for an 11am Central Time kick in most cases. Nebraska’s biggest games all occur on the road, going to Michigan State, Iowa and Wisconsin during Big Ten play.

Having said all that, Nebraska spokesperson Chris Anderson told the AP that the Huskers do anticipate selling the rest of the student tickets before the season starts.
