Brandon Rios vs Diego Chaves took place on Saturday night at the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, Nevada. Rios was returning for the first time in nearly a year after suffering back-to-back losses and failing a drug test and he was hoping to make a statement.
Unfortunately for everyone from Rios to Chaves to the fans in attendance, it was an ugly fight.
Both fighters were getting dirty inside of the clinch and it resulted in multiple warnings and point deductions throughout the match.
Eventually, referee Vic Drakulich had seen enough of the fouls and he waved off the bout at 1:26 of Round 9 with Rios getting a win by disqualification.
At the time of the stoppage, it was actually Chaves who was winning on two of the three scorecards that were being tallied by the ringside judges, but Drakulich decided the fight was over and Rios would get the win.
Here is a look at the judge’s scorecards at the time of the stoppage:
Despite the controversial fight that was less than a stellar display for boxing, Rios got the win and that is all that matters.
