The final score was 2-1, as the Tigers failed to capitalize on golden opportunities early in the game and then could not get to a depleted Yankees’ bullpen to inflict any more damage. So it was that the defending Cy Young award winner was the tough luck loser in the final outcome.
Before he was on the wrong end of some bad luck, however, Scherzer received some mighty good luck in the form of an outstanding defensive play. Had it not been for an outstanding diving catch from center fielder Ezequiel Carrera, the Yankees might have scored a bunch of runs and we wouldn’t be talking about a pitcher’s duel at all.
With the bases loaded early in the game, Jacoby Ellsbury leaned into a pitch over the middle of the plate and sent a line drive to the left-center field gap. Had it touched down it almost surely would have cleared the bases, but Carrera laid out for one of the best catches of the MLB season to rob Ellsbury and keep the damage to just one run.
