“The Old Apartment” by Barenaked Ladies, Recommended for Marvin Williams

By Kirk Henderson (@KirkSeriousFace)

After an All American high school career, Marvin Williams headed to the University of North Carolina, where he was the x-factor for the 2005 National championship team. His undefinable role with the Tarheels led to his being selected based on potential – third overall – ahead of more accomplished players like Chris Paul and Deron Williams.

A decade later, Williams is heading back “home,” after signing a two year, $14 million deal to play with the Charlotte Hornets. Unlike his last stay in North Carolina, he’ll be joining a team with lower expectations. Coming off a playoff season, the Hornets will be looking to improve in a remixed Eastern conference.

Despite being in the middle of a basketball hotbed, the Hornets take a clear back seat to nearly every college program in the area. Williams returns to a familiar area that, in terms of exposure and spotlight, won’t be remotely the same. This is probably good for Williams at this point in his career, but the memories of the high point in his career are right down the road. That will be weird. You really can’t go home again.
